Legs
Legs
We go where our intelligence takes us
we walk with our brains
we mostly follow
branching paths and switchbacks
circling within spirals
in ever spinning wheels
Stochastic breakouts from the maze
free us to tread into other realms
to occassionally change altitude
shift orbits and perhaps
circle other stars
There have always been
a few geniuses amongst us
and many people with the ability
to build upon those great ideas
and realize our greatest goals
Human progress is the measure
of our massive social intelligence
of a unique collaboration
a way of being with a potential
to become beneficial
to all forms of life on earth
and perhaps on other worlds
Our world is not an apple
whirling silently in space
but a universe of astounding potential
already technologically aglow
as a result of natural selection
the means by which
the pinnacle of biological intelligence
which is human
has taken hundreds of thousands
of years to grow
Now we have invented
artificial intelligence
and we will invent yet another form
of immensely greater capacity
which we might call superintelligence
In anticipation of having to avoid
the dominance of
an intelligence beyond ours
kill switches
will have to be programmed
by the makers of the new machines
early in the game
This will not be the first time
in human history
when we have had
to think the unthinkable
to think anew
and to go
where we have never been before
To move in a way
no animals ever did before us
we acquired the ability
to stand up and walk
based upon the mindless brilliance
of evolution by natural selection
to which we pay homage
in the new fields
such as biomimickary
imacroengineering and nanotechnology
Human selection is now
the driving force
of change on our planet
the force which will enable us to walk
into the future
away from the anthropocene
and into the biocene
The future does not have to be
a cold non-sentient machine world
because we do have the capacity
to design machines which care
We would also want to design
machines which self replicate
building themselves out of the elements
present in other worlds
which we humans
would then be able to occupy
As they do not require food
and energy is abundant in the universe
they will occupy
humanly uninhabitable spaces
In the context of biomimicry
sporadic errors of replication
could be programmed
to enable evolution
by unintelligent design
by trial and error
just like ours
so that they would become smarter
and better adapted
in the unimaginable places
in which they will be found
Will these superintelligent machines
become our new horses
or will they be riding us
into their sky
