Dark matters matter

 Dark matters matter

A very small portion

of the mass or energy

in the universe

is visible to the human eye

Most of the matter

that makes up our universe

is dark and invisible

and poorly understood

but its gravitational effects

are apparent everywhere

Dark energy

which accounts for

the expanding universe

makes up the rest of it

predicted mathematically

and described precisely

by the cosmological constant

long before

we recognized its presence

On July fourth

in the United States of America

the national holiday comemorating independence from Britain in 1776

is celebrated

with fireworks after dark

all over the country

But we the people

must acknowledge the darkness

that is a major component

of our country's history

the genocide

of the indigenous population

the unimaginable cruelty of slavery

the public lynchings

Recollection and acknowledgment

of the dark matter and energy

that is our history

is the essential force

expanding our consciousness

and bending us toward the light

We humans

are entirely capable

of celebrating and mourning

at the same time

and should learn to do so

whenever we remember

our punctuated history
