Together

Together (A birthday poem for my wife) We found each other when we were young in a land far away a long time ago the land of all human ancestors a land as beautiful then as it is now although the people were troubled and still are We chose to leave together hoping to find peace and to live freely closer to where our more recent ancestors  had once been slaves but were now free a land as beautiful then as it is now allthough the people were troubled and still are We chose to leave together hoping to find peace and to live freely in the country which had rescued the world from the second great war the country to which many of our immediate ancestors had fled from pogroms and concentration camps hoping to live freely and to thrive We arrived together  upon these shores hand in hand with empty pockets on a steamy summer day fifty years ago walking the freedom trail upon a land as beautiful then as it is now although the people were troubled and still are We are human and we...

Signed with tears

Signed with tears I am having a down moment. I had just searched the Boston Globe for articles regarding Steward Health Care. In the final 20 years of my career, I steered as far clear of that system as I possibly could, although living in its midst. There were 10 recent major newspaper articles regarding this organization, or, to be deliberate, disorganization. To be clear, this entity has been, as the Bible says, corrupt, greedy, unethical and cruel.  I took a deep breath, sitting and sighing, relaxing for a moment. I realized that I have been running away from explosions all of my life. I was born during the first year after World War II, on Armstice Day, in memory of the World War I event, the same day as Veterans Day in the USA. My father, and his family, and my mother‘s family, escaped the pogroms of Eastern Europe, part of the great Jewish diaspora. As a consequence, I grew up in South Africa during Mandela’s long walk to freedom. I recognized the paradox of Jewish li...

The motive force of fire

The motive force of fire Like the steam engine of old war is a most inefficient option for moving people from one place to another Like the locomotive’s breath the poison exhaled is disastrous a derailing train on a path to nowhere Aubrey Lieberman 01/02/24

Enhanced humans

Enhanced humans We have come a long way during the past  quarter of a million years  We have reached so far beyond our roots that were our technology turned off most of us would be incapable  of surviving for a season and then only if we were in the right place at the right time  when the switch was thrown Becoming who we are now has been as enabling as it has been crippling in the real world But this is the path we are on and there is no turning back Being enhanced means living symbiotically and never having to say we are sorry Aubrey Lieberman 01/02/24
