Woodpecker or machine

Woodpecker or machine From a vantage point on high granite at eye level with the canopy my solitude is disturbed by a raucous staccato  somewhere to the south east of this dome I had noticed carpenters  framing a house on the access road to this protected land so I attributed the noise to their nail guns The yellow flicker responsible for the sound took flight at that moment  the source much closer  to my ears than I had imagined Machines not made by humans are products of biology the machinery of which is far more intricate  than we are capable of making But we are products of the same biological processes biological systems in search of ways to survive Biological equilibrium is a complex adaptive system comprised of multiple  complex adaptive subsystems of which we are a part or are now apart  There is an equilibrium between predators and pray of which we are a part too Human intelligence has enabled us to free ourselves from the balance impos...

Old age

Old age The process we call aging probably came to be quite soon after life began  Yeast cells must have done it a billion years ago Aging is more than entropy which is not a simple process  It is a complex adaptive response based upon epigenetic mechanisms tweaked toward species survival over many millions of years of evolution on this planet If nature can do it modern science may discover how and is in the process of doing so Hold onto your hat It may be quite a ride Aubrey Lieberman 11/18/23

Clandestine Mathematics

Clandestine mathematics For those of us  who do not speak the language mathematics may  obfuscate the beauty so obvious to mathematicians This is where poets come in Aubrey Lieberman 11/18/23

The Zoo

The Zoo Animals captive in a zoo live for much longer than those in the wild If the price of freedom is a shorter life so be it Aubrey Lieberman 11/18/23

Age

Age We acquire the concept of life expectancy relatively early in life and quickly learn that lifespan varies hugely amongst the myriad of species of all forms of life in and on the planet we inhabit Although we may never think about it we assume intuitively that our body parts that all of our organs will age synchronously  And when we age well the process is well coordinated  When we don't the discordance may be jarring  Our minds may begin  to leave our bodies in advance of similar deterioration in organs other than the brain  or  on the contrary one of the other organs  may fail first As a result  of the evolutionary process there is a fair chance that  synchronicity will be preserved and that our bodies and minds will walk the long walk back toward stardust  hand in hand Aubrey Lieberman  11/14/23
